Peace, calm and tranquility wash over you as you cross the threshold of Cheveux. It is difficult to believe that this oasis is located in Hunt Valley, Maryland. Cheveux, meaning “hair” in French, is the culmination of over twenty five years in the business for proprietor Jon Michael. After having worked to build a salon that grey to over thirty employees at its apex, Michael began to feel the need to simplify the focus on a smaller endeavor. Longtime client Keith Nusinov told him about the shopping center and the rest is history.
A Maryland native, Michael traveled the globe, studying Europe, Toronto, and throughout the United States, before returning to his home state. His resume includes studies at Trevor Sorbie in London and the study of the molecular structure of hair at lyceum in California. Michael considers himself very fortunate that he studies when Sassoon was premiere in hair dressing, and he was taught precision hair cutting. Hair Surgeon Designers taught him the two most pivotal lessons for his career: (1) how to design his own haircuts and (2) the psychology of a good chair side manner.
The marriage of these essential lessons is quite apparent in the salon. The camaraderie and commitment to excellence make the staff a cohesive team, and customers reap the benefits. While trends in the hair industry may come and go at Cheveux they are always on target with treds due to Michael’s commitment to continuing education and the varied ages of the support staff. Michael is a member of the exclusive Haute Coiffure Franchise, Paris which meets yearly in France to update members on the latest and best techniques in hair. Michael explains that he continues to attend conferences and workshops because “each one refines you a little differently and polishes you more, or if nothing else, validates where you are.”
Whether walking around Paris or strolling through Towson, Michael believes that “if you are really interested in your profession, you see inspiration everywhere around you.” He reflects that “when you go to Paris all of the time you see the world from a whole different perspective - it opens you up. When you go you always bring a piece of it back with you and it energizes you.” This is evident in the work at Cheveux. At the forefront of the industry, they carry Paris Hilton hair extensions, Milbon Japanese hair relaxers from Osaka, and color lines that hail from Holland and Italy.
At Cheveux, the commitment to excellent client service is apparent form the moment customers walk in the door. The warm tones and soft lighting immediately puts clients at ease, and it is impressive that every stylist knows their customers by mane and cultivates a personal relationship. In fact, it is customary for stylists to have consultations with their clients prior to beginning services to ensure that the lines of communication are open to maximize customer satisfaction. And customers are clearly happy as many clients come from as far as New Jersey, Washington, Gaithersburg, and Bethesda for an appointment to have the Cheveux experience.
Michael and his three stylists, Sherry Clarke, Gail Parr, and Michael Vardoulakis, have created the ultimate haven for people who are truly concerned about their hair and appreciate good hair service. Their collective passion for their work is what sets Cheveux apart from typical salons. He has worked to create a salon where the stylists want to be there and are a team of adults who take responsibility for their own growth and success. This atmosphere empowers the stylists and allows Michael to keep things simple from a management perspective.
“It is all about the image – our image and your image. We hold ourselves to high standards and strive to exceed customer’s expectations,” summarizes Michael. And it is that philosophy that makes Cheveux a cut above the rest.
